America’s Shahed‑136 Clone Enters Combat as Ukraine Counters the Same Drone in the Middle East

Operation Epic Fury marks the debut of a U.S.–built long‑range kamikaze drone, a reverse‑engineered copy of Iran’s Shahed‑136. Designed to loiter and strike from afar, the system was launched for the first time in early April during a joint NATO exercise that quickly shifted to live fire against Russian‑aligned targets in eastern Ukraine.

Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that Ukrainian air‑defense crews have been deployed to several Middle Eastern states, where they shot down Iranian‑made Shahed drones being used by Iran in its latest regional conflict. Ukrainian‑made interceptor drones, originally fielded to protect Kyiv’s skies, are now proving their worth abroad.

Both developments underline the drone’s rapid diffusion: a weapon once supplied to Russia is now being reproduced by the United States and countered by Ukraine on two continents. Analysts warn that the Shahed’s low cost and simple architecture will keep it in the arsenals of state and non‑state actors for years to come.
