IRS Pushes Electronic Filing as April Deadline Looms, Extends Relief to DHS Workers and Expands Lender Deductions
Electronic filing reminder
Washington – With the April 15 deadline only weeks away, the Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers that they can still file their 2025 returns electronically and opt for direct‑deposit refunds. The agency said filing online remains the fastest, safest way to avoid penalties and to receive refunds promptly.
Relief for Homeland Security staff
In a joint announcement, the Treasury and the IRS offered special filing relief to Department of Homeland Security employees affected by the ongoing government shutdown. The measure eases paperwork burdens and provides extensions for those facing financial strain.
New lender deduction under Section 139L
The IRS also highlighted a provision in the recently enacted “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.” Section 139L permits eligible lenders to exclude up to 25 % of interest income from federal taxable income, a change aimed at encouraging credit availability.
Taxpayers are urged to act now, either by filing, paying any balance due, or requesting an extension, to avoid interest and penalties.
