From a Broken Wrist to the Transfer Portal

On Feb. 15, 2024 Johnson suffered a broken wrist against Michigan State, sidelining him for the remainder of his freshman season at Illinois. After the season ended he entered the NCAA transfer portal and chose Michigan, a move analysts later described as a rare win‑win for both programs.

Mid‑Season Surge and Elite Eight Heroics

Johnson returned for the 2025 Big Ten tournament, quickly establishing himself as a versatile forward. In the 2026 Midwest Regional Elite Eight on March 29, the 21‑year‑old dunked over Tennessee, a play that captured national attention. Earlier, his decisive layup in the Sweet 16 loss to Alabama added 7 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 24 minutes.

A Voice off the Court

During Thanksgiving week in Las Vegas, Johnson stood beside head coach Dusty May for post‑game interviews, his calm demeanor becoming a fan favourite. By early April, he was a fixture at Michigan’s practice sessions and fan events, embodying the program’s new identity.
