Erik Per Sullivan Declines Lucrative Offer to Return in Malcolm in the Middle Revival

The much‑anticipated Hulu revival Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair will premiere on April 10, 2026, but one original cast member will be absent. Erik Per Sullivan, who played the eccentric piano‑prodigy Dewey, turned down what producers described as “buckets of money” to reprise the role.

Jane Kaczmarek, who played Sullivan’s on‑screen mother, confirmed the offer in an interview, noting that the actor is now a full‑time student at Harvard, immersed in Dickens studies. “He’s an incredible student,” she said, adding that the production team tried to persuade him to leave school for the reboot.

Co‑star Justin Berfield, who portrayed Reese, said Sullivan is “really happy” with his life outside acting and that the decision reflects a broader desire for privacy after a decade out of the spotlight.

With Sullivan unavailable, the role of Dewey has been recast with newcomer Caleb Ellsworth‑Clark. The four‑episode series will reunite most of the original ensemble, but fans will have to imagine Dewey’s antics through a fresh face.

Sullivan’s refusal underscores a growing trend among former child actors who prioritize personal fulfillment over high‑paying comeback gigs.
