Spanish Phenomenon Aday Mara Leads Michigan to Final Four
From Zaragoza to UCLA
Born in Zaragoza, Spain, on April 7, 2005, Aday Mara was a five‑star recruit and the No. 15 overall prospect of the 2023 class, signing with UCLA on Aug. 3, 2023. His athletic lineage includes a father who played professionally for CB Zaragoza and a mother who represented Spain’s women’s volleyball team.
A Leap to Michigan and a Historic Performance
After a season with the Bruins, Mara transferred to the Michigan Wolverines. In the 2026 NCAA Final Four, he posted a career‑high 26 points and nine rebounds, powering Michigan to a 91‑73 victory over Arizona and a berth in the national championship—the school’s first title game since 1989.
Family in the Stands
Mara’s parents, Javier and Gely, flew from Spain to Indianapolis, describing the experience as “amazing” and hoping to celebrate a possible championship together.
Looking Ahead
College analysts now project the 7‑foot‑3 center as a top‑25 NBA draft prospect, while former UCLA coach Mick Cronin noted the difficulty of developing talent that soon departs for new opportunities.
