Texas Community Confronts Tragedy as Athena Strand Case Enters Penalty Phase
Three years after 7‑year‑old Athena Strand vanished from her Paradise, Texas home, the case that shocked Wise County has moved from indictment to sentencing. On Nov. 30, 2022, Tanner Horner, a contracted FedEx driver, abducted the girl while delivering a Christmas present. He later admitted to strangling her inside his truck and dumping her body miles from the family residence.
Last week prosecutors released a haunting black‑and‑white still from surveillance footage showing the little girl standing behind Horner in the van moments before the murder. The image has become a focal point in the penalty phase, which began Tuesday in Fort Wayne, Texas. Horner has pleaded guilty to capital murder and faces a possible death sentence, though his defense argues his autism should preclude it.
The anniversary has revived community grief and renewed calls for stricter vetting of contract delivery workers. The Strand family, still mourning, attended a private funeral earlier this month while the legal process continues to seek accountability.
